Teachers

All of our teachers are professional native Spanish speakers with relevant university degrees from top institutions in Argentina—or are in the final stages of completing their studies. Most speak at least two additional languages and have extensive experience working with international students.

While it may seem obvious, our teachers are the heart of our school. They play a crucial role in making your stay both productive and enjoyable. Our teaching staff are carefully selected through a rigorous hiring process. We offer among the best working conditions in the business, which allows us to attract and retain top talent. All teachers are employed on long-term contracts, ensuring consistency and dedication.

Academic credentials are just the starting point. At Academia Buenos Aires, we also prioritize hiring open-minded, enthusiastic educators who know how to connect with students and bring the language to life. Several of our teachers also teach literature at the prestigious Universidad de Buenos Aires, conduct research, or train future Spanish instructors.

Academic Operations

Our Academic Director, Mariela, is committed to maintaining the highest standards of teaching quality. A graduate of the Universidad de Buenos Aires, she brings over 20 years of experience teaching languages in both public and private institutions. In addition to her expertise in linguistics, Mariela is a licensed psychologist with experience coordinating groups in healthcare settings. At the school, she oversees a broad range of responsibilities, from level testing and curriculum development to teacher evaluation and classroom planning.

Claudia coordinates all classroom activities, both in-person and online. A trained English translator, she ensures that students are accurately placed in the correct level and that each group is matched with the right teacher. She also manages the scheduling of classes, oversees changes, and handles evaluations and diploma issuance.

Mariela and Claudia are supported by the teaching staff in many of their responsibilities, including placement testing, exam development, course planning, and creation of study materials.

Administrative Staff

Silvana, our office manager, has been with Academia Buenos Aires for over 15 years and has welcomed more students than anyone else. She knows Buenos Aires inside and out and is the central point of communication within the school.

Rosario, a recent university graduate, handles inquiries from both current and prospective students and manages our social media presence. She works closely with Angelina, who is responsible for client communication and coordination with partner agencies—particularly in English- and German-speaking countries.

Founders

Maria Marta is Argentinian and a trained psychologist with a graduate degree in Social Policies. She has traveled extensively throughout Latin America and is responsible for human resources and all extracurricular activities at Academia Buenos Aires.

Virginia, originally from Uruguay, is a professor of contemporary dance at the National Art University and a graduate student in creative writing. She oversees administration and accounting at the school.

Francisco, also Argentinian, previously worked with at-risk youth at Argentina’s National Council for Children. In addition to his background in social work, he is an actor, film casting director, and theater costume designer. At Academia Buenos Aires, he is in charge of housing—a vital part of our student experience.

Federico is originally from Germany and holds a doctorate in sociology. After years of living in France, he came to Buenos Aires—and never left. He previously taught at a local university and now leads our marketing and sales efforts.

Teachers are trained to make Spanish understandable through repetition, gestures, visual cues, simple structures, and gradual progression. A large number of our students arrive with little or no Spanish. We can arrange airport pickup, and host families are experienced in welcoming students who don’t yet speak the language. At the school, teachers and staff regularly work with absolute beginners and guide them step by step. Most students learn basic Spanish very quickly, and locals are generally friendly, patient, and willing to help—making daily life manageable from the start.

How fast you learn Spanish depends on your background, motivation, and how much you practice outside the classroom. Previous experience with foreign languages—especially Romance languages—can speed up progress, as can daily interaction with Spanish speakers through host families or social life. For beginners starting from zero, typical progress aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) looks like this: After 2–3 weeks: You can introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and handle simple daily interactions.
